These are my pretty ginger lily flowers,,, there are 3 in the picture,,, one is kind of hard to see cause its small, but the other two are obvious.... It FINALLY bloomed! (Ive had it for 2 years now) It is like the only plant that I have that the foliage dies off and comes back in the spring,,, thats just so weird to me cause everything else either dies and doesnt come back or stays alive all year round since it never freezes down here... This year I got the flower before the foliage.... Here is the pic... and this is it last year about this time,,, when the foliage just started popping up,,, the leaves are AMAZING on this plant,,, they grow about waist high and start off like little tubes popping up from the ground,,, you can see them in the first picture,,, they look like green straws and then open up and have a BEAUTIFUL red stripe in the middle of them... I was looking for a better picture from last year but I couldnt find one,,, the plant itself grows a few hundred leaves and is BIG, this picture below is it just starting to pop up again in the spring last year.. This is one of the plants that actually stays alive through the summer and looks pretty doing so!

Beautiful! It must be a bulb. We have lots of them here. They only live for so long and then have to go dormant for a while before they can grow again. Kristi

Yea its sort of like a bulb,,, i think they call it a rhizome which is similar to a bulb but different,,, you ever see a ginger root? it looks like that... I have several amaryllis bulbs, and several kinds of lily bulbs but the foliage never dies on those,,, they just sprout flowers randomly throughout the year and the foliage grows all year long... Do you have to dig up your bulbs or leave them and they just sprout back up in the spring on their own?
I was looking up ginger lilies after I posted this and they actually grow up to 7 feet tall! I couldnt believe that! Mine is just a baby being waist high I guess!

I don't dig them up, but some people do..Weird, I didn't know they could live all year!

I know,,, and here I am thinking its weird that they just die in the fall up there and live in frozen ground all winter long! It seems impossible to me, but I know it happens,,, my grandma always had rose bushes that she cut back in the summer and they stayed in the ground dormant until spring and then bloomed all summer long! Its crazy to me,,, you would think the living part of the pant would die in the cold harsh weather,,, but apparently not! Which leads me to thinking,,, my mom gave me some rain lilies,,, they are actually grand babies from my great grandmothers rain lilies... Well I planted a bunch of them 2 years ago when I moved in this house,,, and I just dug up a whole lot of them because I had too many taking over my veggie garden,,, I was wondering what I am going to do with them,,, does anyone want some? They are fast growers and can even live in pots,,, seriously I dug some up and took the foliage off and just put the bulbs in an empty pot and they started to grow like that! They are super hardy,,, if anyone wants some I'll send some your way! I think it would be kind of cool for any of you to have a plant/bulbs that was so connected to me and my family actually
