Split from: Mystery+Rocks%2C+help+me+identify+please%21+%3A%29Oooo! Me too. I might could use some tips on how to use the tips and vice! I bought a dremmel a year ago but haven't done much with it. Intended to but then I started work and well yanno? I wanna try symbols and stuff but we'll see. What type of stone do you suggest starting off with? Oh and for the stones (above) Looks like turquoise to me. Someone already said do I didn't have anything new to add. What ever it is it's really pretty. Im practicing on several different kinds of rocks... I am in no way, "good" at it,,, got a way to go before im "good" but im working at it... I would totally suggest getting a little vice, you for sure dont want to be holding the rock in your hands and try it,, if it slipped that dremel would rip your hands to shreds,,, my vice was cheap on eBay, I forget how much, Id say 10 or 20 at the most tho.... And while your there make sure you have some safety glasses,,, last thing I wana hear from one of us is that some stuff flew into someones eyes while trying to drill rocks! I got some of those on eBay too,,, they were not much either... I have a few sized diamond bits, I have used those and I actually used the bit that you use to make a hole in your wall for a screw. I dont know what the bit is called but it works really good.... Like I said, im still playing with it,,, but you know practice makes perfect, right? hehehe.... Id love to hear anyone elses dremel tips.... ((((hugs))))

Here are a couple of the first ones I have done... I got a Dremel engraver,,, it works much better then the regular dremel, I think because it is smaller and easier to handle.. I actually forgot that I got this engraver, I think it came in just before I got sick and I put it away and forgot about it... Anyhow it was pretty cheap, I forget how much, but I know it was less the the cordless Dremel I bought. The tip is a carbide steel... Just thought I would share this is a raw piece of green aventurine,,, its really sparkley... this is an amethyst Im gonna get some of those pens that are really paint and use those to highlight the engraving. What do ya think?

I think that's an awesome idea!!! And I already have a vice in our garage on the workbench! I thought maybe it was a special sort of vice or something. I only have a cordless dremel but I could try it. I bought some really expensive tips for it so even if I just try to etch glass or something I want to try yanno? If I'm sucessful maybe I'll check out an actual engraver. Those look really awesome and straight too! I bet a little paint will just give it an extra touch yannO! Cool!

Thanks,,, I think the paint will make them look better also. I tried the regular diamond tip for my regular dremel,,,, on my engraver, it works, but they also have a diamond tip for the engraver that I will probably buy. The regular tip was just longer... The only reason I would suggest an engraver is if the regular Dremel was too heavy to handle,,, if it isnt for you then go for it!
I am actually really excited about these,,, this was pretty fun and I think in time I will be able to do them quicker. I have to add that I tried to work on some colored agate and that was HARD,,, I am going to have to read more about the hardness of each stone and figure out which ones work and which ones are harder to work with,,, like I know a few but now I need to know...
The vice is just a regular 2 1/2 inch vice, nothing special,,, but it saves fingers lol... I tried to hold a rock down and dremel it without the vice and that was just too hard, it kept wanting to slip away,,, that and I am just not sure about the dremel and what it would do to my fingers if it caught me!
I cant wait to see your pics guys!

See how you guys are . You can't just tell us about one of your addictions, but you also have to give us the site to find it. You already did our shopping for us..and found a great deal. What else is a pusher to do, right. What is a girl to do.

Ok, this pic is not great, but this is my first try with the dremel. If you can't tell, it's an Om on Amazonite. I got a smaller tip, and am going to do some more this weekend. Kristi

Here are some I did today............. I use the hearts in Reiki sessions, and had drawn the symbols on with permanent marker. Now they are carved, and I used a paint marker to color them. I am calling this one my peace crystal, and am working putting peace signs on every face. I am having a blast with this! Thanks STar for the suggestion of the vice and goggles, they are coming in very handy! Kristi
