You can go to a local craft store (we have Michael's here) and buy kits and stuff. I've never done it but it looks easy. LOL

Interesting about recipes.... I would love to see yours... I dont have any really,,, I just make what comes to me at the time... I have written down how I made all my candles that I sell but I guess I dont really consider them recipes cause I just add color and dye and then decorate them...
Sooo, whatcha got?
Oh and just a tidbit of info for ya,,, there are different kinds of wax you can buy... One kind is called mottled,,, thats pretty neat, it makes the candles look all crackled. There are some really good books out there on decorating candles, maybe try that... if you need I can look and tell you the names of mine...

What I have heard is they are messy. There is a store here that specializes in candle making, from molds to waxes and everything in between. Maybe check your area for that. I have checked at the usual craft stores for many different items, trust me, and they have kits.
I also think books are a great idea.

Actually i haven't found them to be messy yet lol!!! I put down a sheet of newspaper, heat the wax, add the color and scent, pour into the mold. That's all it takes If you buy the wax in larger quantities it is definitely cheaper! AND it's fun!

I went through a period of making my own candles. I buy alot of those tall glass deals they sell in most Rock Shops and Book stores. And it seemed such a waste to just use the glass container once and not re-use it yanno? So I"ll re-fill them but that's about as far as I've gone. I'm out of wax now but always have containers I need to fill LOL!
And I never made a mess either, but I did feel it was "messy". Since i only have one of the kettle things switching from a dark color (say red or black) could be a pain as I had to heat it and clean it real good.
I don't have any recipes either. Just do the dye they sell at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. And most times I don't scent them.

Yeah, no thanks. The most I ever did was 5 and that was enough "fun" for me in one day LOL!
My Brother used to sell candles a few years ago. Both here local and on Ebay. He would do bulk orders. Girl he had wax ALL OVER the floor. It was crazy. He started putting paper down but as the orders came in and in he just hurried. It was bad.
I made them to order (by size) for alters and such. So it was pretty busy for him. He made molds out of those plastic plumbing type tubes. Capped them off and strung the wick down in them and hung them to dry on these racks he made.
One of his many "business idea's" of the past LOL!

Maybe I'll try making some someday but I've already got a house that is upside down and is not going to be upside up (is that the opposite of upside down?) for a few weeks. Then, I am going to settle, relax (I hope) and veg for a while.

There's nothing like making your own candles because you can choose just the right colors, and just the right amount and combination of scent (Bergamot and Lemon is one of my favorite combinations). Candle making can actually be pretty clean once you work up a system to keep it neat and its definitely a lot cheaper than buying candles. I make batches of candles and soap and sell them at the local farm market. Craft shops are a good place to start, but there's a few companies that have a larger selection at better prices and more natural. Beeswax is so great because you don't even need scent, that wonderful honey tint comes naturally. Unfortunately the price of beeswax in a craft store is so high you almost have to own bees or know someone who does in order to obtain reasonably priced beeswax. Then there's soy, which burns so much cleaner than paraffin, and my favorite palm wax which sparkles like snowflakes once its poured. And all of those waxes are renewable. There are even have eco-friendly colorings, which are usually difficult to find in a craft store, but often readily available from bulk suppliers. Soy wax is really the only one that I've found that will take to homemade plant dyes and it has to be really concentrated to get any coloring in the wax. (But in soap plant dyes work great, watermelon produces this bright orange that kinda looks like Dial soap without all the funky chemicals of Dial) As for scents, essential oils are nice because they're natural, but unfortunately the scent only lasts about three months in a candle; no saving them for later.

Ok this just brought up a question I'm interested in since we have all these candle guru's here.
Scenting with essential oils. It's been my experience that the oils just fall to the bottom of the heated wax... like you can see it just fall down there. And no matter how much I add it seems to not be enough. Any idea's for this? I tried to make a Saffy Scented "lunar oil" candle and it didn't work.
Incase I do make some up again knowing how to get the oils in would be cool to know. I've just done no scent usually but tried this once or twice.
Ok ramble central out!

Anamere, maybe your wax wasn't hot enough when you added the oils, or maybe the oils didn't agree with the type of wax you used. I can't think of any other reason why the oils wouldn't mix. If all else fails, you could always make a container candle pouring in layers, then the oil couldn't sink all the way to the bottom. Elfie

Thanks Elfie. I'll have to try the layering or something. I have a feeling the oils and wax didn't really mix. It's like the oil just seemed heavy or something. I dunno. But maybe next time I'll try something else. One day when I'm feeling adventurous LOL
