I found this lovely description of them and I thought I would share it.
The general characteristic that separates a Spirit Guide from other types of spiritual beings is that they have lived a physical life and return to aide others in working through the same lessons they have been through. Spirit Guide is here to help with problem solving. They can often appear in groups as well as singular. These guides are learning just as we are and although their perspective is much broader than ours is they often remain in the background watching to see how we solve our problems. They give insight through dreams or meditation and at times a sudden realization of a situation that is developing and our role in that. The proverbial " light bulb going off". They can remain with us our whole lifetime or stay only for a set amount of time. They are prearranged prior to incarnation.

Oh, way cool. I am so glad you brought this up. I had one come to me again a couple nights ago. I have been meditating at least once every day (I know I should more) and a beautiful lady came to me. She had wings but it looked like she was trying to cover them with a white cloth. She was so bright. She didn't say anything, but I got a message something about learning or something like that. I think on my astrology sign, I have a very high female presence and that's why I keep getting female guides and such. I keep dreaming of schools to...hmm, think I'm being told something.

And I must throw this in for good measure.....because guides are learning as well, they are just that...guides. They are capable of being less than divinely perfect. But they are well-meaning and, boy, when I ask a question lately, I usually get an immediate response! When I couldn't decide what kind of car to buy last fall (everyone wanted me to get something different and I didn't know what I wanted), I threw the question out to them and IMMEDIATELY heard my answer (one that wasn't even in the equation!) and it's just right!

Very cool post! Funny how it said stand in the background. Today I was in a healer group and one girl said "there is someone right next to you but back there" and she pointed kinda back of the room type thing. And I knew it was a Reiki Guide I felt he was just waiting watching and stepping in if I needed him yannO?
It's just so cool when people can see them. That's something I'm not, well I'm not there yet... I'll say that LOL!

My reiki master did a guided meditation with me, one to meet your reiki guides, this was new for me, something I will always remember I must say..my guide raised out his hands, and in one hand had a flame, it scared me, and my reiki master brought me out of meditation...I did continue later, should not have feared, he was offering learning and wisdom  Kathy |

I met with my main Guide Bluehawk 15 years ago and he worked with me when I gave clairvoyance using Tarot. We used to be husband and wife previously. I always ask him to draw near in all my work and meditations. I have also seen myself in previous Native American lives...a really odd experience to have was looking at myself as a Native American and realising that back then I was looking at myself now! A kind of knowing flowed between us which travelled across space and time.
I have other Guides working with me now too depending on the work that I'm doing but I ask all the Guides that work with me to draw near, whatever I might be doing, becuase you never know which one could bring vital information to me.
Just thought I'd share that with you lol!

I adore my spirit guide Jonathan. He is an amazing influence on my life and as a Reiki practitioner it is a great comfort to have him with me each day. I believe that God guides him to guide me as well. Its an amazing thing to know. I believe I have more guides but I have not met them yet. ;D
